وقتی یک دندان به طور بدی دچار پوسیدگی شده و یا به دلایل دیگر عفونت کرده باشد برای نجات و ترمیم آن درمانی صورت می‌گیرد که عصب کشی نام دارد. پالپ که ناحیه‌ای نرم در مرکز دندان است و عصب دندان در مجراهای ریشه دندان قرار دارد. در این مجراها به غیر از عصب، عروق خونی نیز قرار دارد. که وظیفه خون رسانی و تغذیه دندان‌ها را به عهده دارد. وقتی عصب دندان دچار آسیب می‌شود، باکتریها در آن شروع به تکثیر می‌نمایند. این باکتری‌ها و سایر موادی که از پوسیدگی ایجاد می‌شود دندان را عفونی کرده و آبسه ایجاد می‌کند آبسه دندان کیسه‌هایی پر از چرک هستند که در انتهای ریشه به وجود می‌آیند.
